"Christlike Forgiveness"
Mar 26, 2023 • Pastor Eli Byrd
Pastor Byrd used the story of Joseph and his brothers to teach about biblical forgiveness. He began by explaining what forgiveness is not: it's not neglecting to acknowledge sin, not forgetting what happened, and not avoiding consequences. Joseph's brothers acknowledged their evil against him, and Joseph remembered what they did but chose not to count it against them. The pastor emphasized that forgiveness doesn't eliminate consequences - people still live with the results of their actions even when forgiven. He then moved to what forgiveness is, starting with submitting to God's sovereignty, as Joseph recognized that what his brothers meant for evil, God meant for good.
In this message:
Forgiveness is not neglecting to acknowledge sin - the brothers acknowledged they had done evil against Joseph.Forgiveness is not forgetting - you cannot simply forget what someone has done to you unless your memory is wiped.Forgiveness is not counting sin against someone - Joseph chose not to hold their sin over his brothers.Forgiveness is not without consequences - you can be forgiven but still live with the results of your actions.Forgiveness is submitting to the sovereignty of God - Joseph saw that God meant for good what his brothers meant for evil.
