The Widow's Offering: Giving Everything to God
Jan 18, 2026 • Pastor Tim Akin
Pastor Akin examined the story of the widow's offering from Mark 12:41-44, where Jesus observed people giving at the temple treasury. While rich people gave large amounts that made loud noises in the treasure chests, a poor widow quietly gave two small copper coins worth only a penny. Jesus told his disciples that she had given more than all the others because they gave out of abundance while she gave everything she had to live on. The pastor emphasized that God cares about the heart and motives behind giving rather than the amount. He illustrated this with a story about his parents giving their wedding rings during a church campaign when they were poor students, saying they gave 'the very best that we could do.'
In this message:
Jesus cares more about why we give than how much we give. The widow gave everything she had, holding nothing back from God.When God converts your heart, he converts every part of your life including your pocketbook. We should give our very best to God because he first gave his very best to us.Generous and cheerful giving is expected of every follower of Christ whether you have a lot or a little.
