Money and Worship: The Rich Young Ruler
Jan 4, 2026 • Pastor Tim Akin
Pastor Akin began a three-week series called "Make It Count" with the main idea that financial giving matters to the Lord and builds up his church. He explained why the church preaches on giving annually, citing it as a spiritual matter, indicator of maturity, and practical necessity. Using the story of the rich young ruler from Luke 18:18-30, he demonstrated how money often represents something deeper than finances - it becomes worship when it controls our thoughts and determines our direction. The pastor emphasized that money can control lives whether someone is rich or poor, and that Jesus demands to be Lord of every compartment of life, not just our spiritual activities.
In this message:
Money often times is a lot more about something else than just money.Your heart always follows your money - what you value will control the way that you live.Jesus is not satisfied with being in your top three - he cannot be second to anyone or anything in your life. When the Bible says that Jesus to be Lord of your life, every part of your life has to come under his lordship. It's possible to allow money and finances to control your life when you have lots of it and when you have little.
